A North Country Life Giveaway
Sydney Lea’s work evokes places and feelings in a way few ever master. In his newest book, A North Country Life: Tales of Woodsmen, Waters, and Wildlife (Skyhorse Publishing, January 2013), the Poet Laureate of Vermont shares a breathtaking account of the blending of the human and natural worlds.
Lea looks back at a lifetime’s worth of hunting, fishing, and forming friendship in the Northeast Kingdom. Loosely organized by the changing of seasons, different sections feature topics such as childhood family fishing trips in the wilds of Maine, trophy fishing in the northern reaches of the Connecticut River, the opening day of turkey hunting season in Vermont, and getting lost in the deep woods while deer hunting. Thoughtful portraits of New England elders and the author’s friends bring to life the outdoors as seen through many different eyes, inspiring readers to take a new look at the world around them. Lea’s powerful connection with his family, friends, and the outdoors will strike a chord with anyone interested in the contemplative side of nature—which, in truth, is all of us.
