The Knockoff

Image
An outrageously stylish, wickedly funny novel of fashion in the digital age, The Knockoff is the story of Imogen Tate, editor in chief of Glossy magazine, who finds her twentysomething former assistant Eve Morton plotting to knock Imogen off her pedestal, take over her job, and reduce the magazine, famous for its lavish 768-page September issue, into an app. When Imogen returns to work at Glossy after six months away, she can barely recognize her own magazine. Eve, fresh out of Harvard Business School, has fired “the gray hairs,” put the managing editor in a supply closet, stopped using the landlines, and hired a bevy of manicured and questionably attired underlings who text and tweet their way through meetings. Imogen, darling of the fashion world, may have Alexander Wang and Diane von Furstenberg on speed dial, but she can’t tell Facebook from Foursquare and once got her iPhone stuck in Japanese for two days. Under Eve’s reign, Glossy is rapidly becoming a digital sweatshop—hackath

I like that the bugs featured in this book are not scary, creepy ones but cool, fun ones. Max is a good hero. Also he is relatable. Someone that the young readers will connect with and cheer for. The illustrations in this book are great. They add to the story and help make the world of Bug Island come alive. I was so into this book that even though it was short, it was still a fast read

The Silence is bone-chilling creepy and scary!

Image
A terror-filled story of one family and their friends, as they struggle to survive in a world overrun by ravenous creatures that hunt purely by sound... My Review Ok, so if you are a fan of horror books then you have to check this book out. The Silence is bone-chilling creepy and scary! In a great way. Right from the moment I opened this book I was glued to it. At first I thought this book was going to have the feel of The Descent. The movie about six female friends who go caving and encounter evil creatures. Which this book did have a little bit of this aspect with the creatures but I also pictured this book as being a silent movie. What with Ally being deaf. This twist with making Ally deaf fit in with the story nicely. Actually the idea of taking this book and turning it into a silent movie on the big screen would be cool. This book also had elements of Resident Evil. So if these references don't get you hyped to read this book than I don't know what would, except may

Worthy Brown's Daughter. Instantly, I was spellbound by this book

Image
Known for his critically acclaimed contemporary thrillers, New York Times bestselling author Phillip Margolin explores intriguing new territory in Worthy Brown's Daughter, a compelling historical drama, set in nineteenth-century Oregon, that combines a heartbreaking story of slavery and murder with classic Margolin plot twists. One of a handful of lawyers in the new state of Oregon, recently widowed Matthew Penny agrees to help Worthy Brown, a newly freed slave, rescue his fifteen year old daughter, Roxanne, from their former master, a powerful Portland lawyer. Worthy's lawsuit sets in motion events that lead to Worthy's arrest for murder and create an agonizing moral dilemma that could send either Worthy or Matthew to the hangman. At the same time, hanging judge Jed Tyler, a powerful politician with a barren personal life, becomes infatuated with a beautiful gold-digger who is scheming to murder Benjamin Gillette, Oregon's wealthiest businessman. When Gillette ap

The #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense delivers a shocking thriller that proves that a well-placed lie can help build a comfortable life—and a secret has the same explosive power to destroy it. Harlan Coben’s seven consecutive #1 New York Times bestsellers feature unrivaled depths of emotion combined with cutting-edge suspense plots that keep millions of readers turning pages deep into the night. In The Stranger , married parents Adam and Hannah confront the shocking secret on which their marriage is built—leaving Adam wondering whether he ever truly knew Hannah at all. My Review It has been a long time since I have read a book by this author. For the most part I enjoyed all of the books that I have read by this author. So when I saw Mr. Coben's latest book, I thought now is a good time to revisit this author and his work. OMG. I read this book in a few short hours. The idea of a stranger coming into someone's life and telling them something about the

Dawn of Destiny Blog Tour + Giveaway

Book Description: Some men go to war for the glory. Some men go to war to escape. For Scott Remington, war is entirely different. It is a belief. It is a calling. It is a destiny. Leaving everything behind—his fiancée, his future, his life—he embarks on a mission of faith into a battle he can barely understand. This is his story. This is his war. This is only the beginning. Audiobook Description: The Dawn of Destiny audiobook project is a full adaptation of the first book in the Epic series. It's not your typical “audiobook,” even though technically that's what it is. When people hear “audiobook,” there’s a certain type of thing that usually comes to mind. Most likely it’s the thought of someone reading a book to them, occasionally with music playing in the background. This isn't that. What you’re going to hear in this project, is more of an audio “experience,” the audio equivalent of a summer blockbuster movie. Over thirty voice actors played a role in t

Rash actions have cost him his job, but that doesn’t stop his obsessive hunt for the Ripper. The Ghosts of Petroglyph Canyon

Image
School is out for the summer and Pablo Perez, his sister, Pia, and their cousin, Kiki Flores, visit the Bar-7 ranch in New Mexico. The young Missourians have come to help their Uncle Antonio with the annual cattle roundup.   Uncle Antonio introduces his nephew and nieces to hundreds of primitive petroglyphs that have been chiseled into the walls of a nearby canyon—Petroglyph Canyon. The primitive rock drawings are part of Uncle Antonio’s sprawling cattle ranch. Sadly, looters are routinely excavating the ancient drawings with high-tech rock saws. Uncle Antonio believes the looters are selling the glyphs. Pablo, Pia, and Kiki are determined to put a stop to the looting, and that’s when the adventure begins. My Review This is the second younger reader book from Mr. Cloud. His first book was The Boy Called Duct Tape. That is when I first got to know Pablo, Pia, and Kiki. Since then I wanted to read the next book from this author. Mr. Cloud is not a one trick pony. Pablo, Pia

After the RED Rain

A postapocalyptic novel with a cinematic twist from New York Times bestseller Barry Lyga, actor Peter Facinelli, and producer Robert DeFranco. On the ruined planet Earth, where 50 billion people are confined to megacities and resources are scarce, Deedra has been handed a bleak and mundane existence by the Magistrate she works so hard for. But one day she comes across a beautiful boy named Rose struggling to cross the river--a boy with a secretive past and special abilities, who is somehow able to find comfort and life from their dying planet. But just as the two form a bond, it is quickly torn apart after the Magistrate's son is murdered and Rose becomes the prime suspect. Little do Deedra and Rose know how much their relationship will affect the fate of everyone who lives on the planet.    My Review I was not fazed by the fact that this book had actor, Peter Facinelli's name connected to it. I was more interested in the postapocalyptic aspect of this book. The pre

Where They Found Her

Image
From the author of the New York Times bestseller and 2014 Edgar and Anthony nominee Reconstructing Amelia comes another harrowing, gripping novel that marries psychological suspense with an emotionally powerful story about a community struggling with the consequences of a devastating discovery At the end of a long winter, in bucolic Ridgedale, New Jersey, the body of an infant is discovered in the woods near the town’s prestigious university campus. No one knows who the baby is, or how her body ended up out there. But there is no shortage of opinions. When freelance journalist, and recent Ridgedale transplant, Molly Anderson is unexpectedly called upon to cover the story for the Ridegdale Reader, it’s a risk, given the severe depression that followed the loss of her own baby. But the bigger threat comes when Molly unearths some of Ridgedale’s darkest secrets, including a string of unreported sexual assaults that goes back twenty years. Meanwhile, Sandy, a high school dropout, sear

THE GREAT LEADER & THE FIGHTER PILOT

Image
ABOUT THE GREAT LEADER AND THE FIGHTER PILOT : As Kim Il-Sung ascended from Soviet puppet to godlike ruler and plunged his country into war against the United States, No Kum Sok noisily pretended to love his Great Leader. An elite fighter pilot and graduate of the North Korean Naval Academy, he escaped at the age of twenty-one by flying his MiG-15 out of North Korea and landed in Seoul on September 21, 1953, delivering the plane to the Americans, not knowing they were offering a $100,000 bounty for the warplane (the equivalent of nearly one million dollars today).  The theft—just weeks after the Korean War ended—electrified the world and incited Kim’s bloody vengeance.   Harden also sheds light on a seldom-discussed historical fact: during the Korean War, the United States brutally carpet-bombed North Korea, killing hundreds of thousands of civilians and giving the Kim dynasty the fact-based narrative it uses to this day to inspire hatred of the United States. This narra

Vostok, Chatting with author, Steve Alten + Giveaway

Image
My Review This is my first introduction to author, Steve Alten. While this book does feature characters from his prior novel, The Loch, you don't have to have read The Loch to read this book. When the first discovery was found with the preserved beasts I was interested and the story lit up the light in my head. Yet, when Zach, Ming, and Ben plunged into the depths of Lake Vostok and encountered all that the lake had to offer, I was hooked and could not stop reading. It was like I was with the crew as they were experiencing every thing for the first time. I could picture the creatures as if they really could exist. Although, I had no problems imaging them, I did appreciate Mr. Alten adding illustrations of the creatures. As I was reading the book, I never really thought about the rhyme or reason for the whole story. So when it was revealed, at first I was not sure if I liked this angle but the more I thought about it, the more I got it and liked it. It was like a "Ah

Twelve Thousand Mornings is a nice read.

Wealthy Anne Bennett is left widowed and penniless after her husband's firm is involved in financial fraud. In shock and forced to leave her home, she has few friends to turn to and few options for financial security. Estranged from her two adult daughters, she nevertheless accepts an invitation, or perhaps a challenge, to stay with her younger daughter, Sylvia, in Michigan. While helping Sylvia renovate an old house, Anne finds new friends and a new life, but with guilt, grief and the ghost of tragedy shadowing her every step, she must come to terms with her past in order to navigate her future. My Review I have not read the first book The World Undone, yet this book can be read as a stand alone novel. In the beginning, I was not sure about this book. Anna's sister and her family were mean. Anna's husband, Henry was a jerk. So glad that he did not last long in the story. So with most of the characters that I was introduced to early into the story being so unwelcome,

So many laughs for the Tapper Twins

Image
This brand-new series by a popular screenwriter is a pitch-perfect, contemporary comedy featuring twelve-year-old fraternal twins, Claudia and Reese, who couldn't be more different...except in their determination to come out on top in a vicious prank war! But when the competition escalates into an all-out battle that's fought from the cafeteria of their New York City private school all the way to the fictional universe of an online video game, the twins have to decide if their efforts to destroy each other are worth the price. Told as a colorful "oral history" by the twins and their friends, and including photos, screenshots, chat logs, online gaming digital art, and text messages between their clueless parents, The Tapper Twins is a hilariously authentic showcase of what it's like to be in middle school in our digitally-saturated world. My Review I picked up this book for my nephews because I thought they may like it. I was not familiar with the author'
