The first post here has an awesome poem:

http://boards.youthnoise.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/63510584663/m/77110496763

It's from the book The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. that is one of my favorite books and the poem is great, though I don't know who actuallyyyy wrote it. I think it's from somewhere else.

I love this poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning:

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,—I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!—and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Valentine memory:

In 5th grade, Eli Karplus left a box of chocolate covered marshmallow hearts in my VERY messy desk, with a handwritten Valentine on a yellow sticky note. It was the first and last time a boy bought me candy for that holiday until I was teaching and one of my 6th grade students gave me a box.

"Mad Girl's Love Song" by Sylvia Plath:

"I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead;
I lift my lids and all is born again.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

The stars go waltzing out in blue and red,
And arbitrary blackness gallops in:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed
And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

God topples from the sky, hell's fires fade:
Exit seraphim and Satan's men:
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

I fancied you'd return the way you said,
But I grow old and I forget your name.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

I should have loved a thunderbird instead;
At least when spring comes they roar back again.
I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)"

Well you didn't say it had to be a V-Day Poem, (this one isn't)

"Accept Me" by Larry Chengges

I am I... Do not change me, condemn me, nor put me down.

Accept me for what I am. No... you need not agree with me, But accept me.

For I am total in being, I have my faults, I have my guilts, But that is who I am. Perfect I will never be.

Allow me to be uninhibited. Do not pressure me into feeling what I do not feel.

Accept me when I am flying high. As I have accepted you when you were flying high.

Do not put me down... nor make me feel unhappy about me.

I am I... and I like being what I am... Me!

A favorite poem (not a love poem, but a reminder to me about what is and what isn't important):

Salutation

O generation of the thoroughly smug
and thoroughly uncomfortable,
I have seen fishermen picnicking in the sun,
I have seen them with untidy families,
I have seen their smiles full of teeth
and heard ungainly laughter.
And I am happier than you are,
And they were happier than I am;
And the fish swim in the lake
and do not even own clothing.

How exciting! My favorite Valentine's Day gift ever was probably the scrapbook made by my ex-boyfriend, chronicling our relationship up to that point.

While we were out for the big day, he had a Polaroid camera -- and he kept taking photos of crazy things we were doing! Most of the pictures were totally random, but I humored him. I kept telling him I wanted to scan them all when we got home so I would have copies, too, and he told me not to worry about it. In the end, the pictures were all for me -- for a scrapbook that he had completed himself! It had sayings, notes, all sorts of things. And even though we're not together anymore, I still remember that day -- and that gift! -- fondly!

And here's my favorite poem ever, which is sort of romantic and bittersweet and just great:

First Poem for You
By Kim Addonizio

I like to touch your tattoos in complete darkness, when I can’t see them. I’m sure of where they are, know by heart the neat lines of lightning pulsing just above
your nipple, can find, as if by instinct, the blue swirls of water on your shoulder where a serpent
twists, facing a dragon. When I pull you

to me, taking you until we’re spent and quiet on the sheets, I love to kiss the pictures in your skin. They’ll last until you’re seared to ashes; whatever persists
or turns to pain between us, they will still be there. Such permanence is terrifying. So I touch them in the dark; but touch them, trying.

Thanks for the chance!

Here is a Valentine's Day Poem...I didn't write it though:

War O' Valentines Day

A swirl of Red and White
A day of purity and heart
A swirl of X's and O's
A new day for goodbyes and hellos

Enjoy that hearts golden arch
While you still have time
A month away from the marchers of March
Those pesky criminals of crime

A swirl of Roses and chocolates
A day of love and hate
A swirl of smiles and frowns
A new day for falling in and falling down

Hands grasping, Hearts breaking
Sacrifice in crowded halls, rose petaled floors
A lesson of giving and taking
This riot of redemption and remorse

A swirl of gifts of all sizes
A day of heart felt suprises
A swirl of sweat, blood, and tears
A new day comes and goes all of these years

The wounded lay face down hollow
Stabbed by a stinging single word
All they wanted was a yes, Broken with a NO!
Echoes chanting War O' Valentines Day, all thats heard

Love:

As we look in our hearts to find the one thing we want most
We never truly find it.
We know that we are going to experience it,
well, hopefully we will one day.
But as love interrupts our mind
and shows what lust is in our hearts
The image comes to mind.
Of what love should be.
Between two people,
Sacred love, between the hearts
Of two young innocent people
And that love should last,
But it never does.
It fades…………
Just like the memory of the first time
We were in love.
We always tend not to forget, but we do.
Well, most of us do.
Some of us stay in love or at least remember it.
We never want the old flame to die, but eventually,
It has to. In order to move on.

by me! Sorry, it's kinda sad, but it is about it is a poem...

My greatest Valentine's day memory/gift? Don't think I really have one, but I loved those days back in elementary school when everyone gave everybody else candy. Back then, Valentine's wasn't for love of another person, it was a love for candy! hehehe.
Michelle Kuo said…
A poem about love (I wrote it last year for English class xD):

A lockdown of love.
Your firm grasp on everything you touch
Is inescapable.
With just one stare, none can move.
Your power
Causes blindness of the eyes
But opens the hearts and minds
Of the wise, poor, affluent, and naive.
Just how do you work like magic?
You have the ability to make unbreakable bonds
With the strength of steel handcuffs,
Knots that are the hardest to untie,
The silky, indestructible strings of a spider's web.
The course to find you "never did run smooth,"
But the reward is great--
Genuine pleasure and happiness.

Hi Cheryl,

You're on my blogroll smbooks.blogspot.com & I follow. Here's my love poem:

somehwere i have never travelled,gladly beyond
any experience,your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully,mysteriously)her first rose

or if your wish be to close me,i and
my life will shut very beautifully,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody,not even the rain, has such small hands

And I have never gotten any Valentine's presents from anyone save my parents who always buy me beautiful flowers every year :) The one boyfriend I have ever had got grounded on Valentine's Day last year so I don''t count the ring I got. Oh how I hate this holiday

Poem:
My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask'd, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.
- William Shakespeare

The first dozen long-stemmed red roses with baby's breath in a presentaton box was my best Valentine's gift. When I asked, "Where from?" The response was, "A wholesale florist." The following year with a repeat of roses, I found it's the thought that counts, even if it's a perk from a client. They still smelled good and looked great in a previous gift of a tall burgandy glass vase. I think he planned it all along.

"Take, O Take" By W. Shakespeare

TAKE, O take those lips away
That so sweetly were forsworn,
And those eyes, the break of day,
Lights that do mislead the morn:
But my kisses bring again,
Bring again—
Seals of love, but seal’d in vain,
Seal’d in vain!

Great giveawa!I am a FOLLOWER already and you are already on my BLOG LIST at BOOKIN'WITH BINGO. SPECIAL GIFT: single rose from my then boyfriend, who turned into my husband now of 36 years, to signify he loved me and it was the first time he "said" it to me. Will BLOG ABOUT YOUR CONTEST on my blog. POEM I will go with is familiar, I know but still Frost is one of my favorite's:

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

And I think (?) I did them all?

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Super give-away!

My most special Valentine's gift was the first Valentine my current boyfriend and I spent. We met about 3 weeks earlier and he had to work but before he went home he stopped by the house with 1 red rose from his one heart. It may sound cheap but it was really very touching.

I also signed up to follow your blog.

I love you.
You’re the joy in my heart,
The sparkle in my eye,
The light in my life.

I love you.
You’re the wind to my wings,
The steps to my dances,
The voice to my songs.

I love you.
You’re the reason for breathing,
The purpose for thriving,
The cause for living.

I love you.
You’re the most caring human being,
The very generous and gentle,
The loveliest of them all.

Poem:
When You Are Old
By W. B. Yeats

When you are old and gray and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true;
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face.

And bending down beside the glowing bars
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And his face amid a crowd of stars.

My favorite Valentine memory is the simplicity I shared with someone I loved. We didn't spend a dime on each other that year, we simply exchanged letters telling one another why we loved them. It's a tradition we continue to this day. You don't need money or extravagance to show someone you love them. (Hugs)Indigo

poem by Stephen Crane

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said: "Is it good, friend?"
"It is bitter - bitter," he answered;
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

Break, Break, Break
by Lord Tennyson

Break, break, break,
On thy cold gray stones, O Sea!
And I would that my tongue could utter
The thoughts that arise in me.

O well for the fisherman's boy,
That he shouts with his sister at play!
O well for the sailor lad,
That he sings in his boat on the bay!

And the stately ships go on
To their haven under the hill;
But O for the touch of a vanish'd hand,
And the sound of a voice that is still!

Break, break, break,
At the foot of thy crags, O Sea!
But the tender grace of a day that is dead
Will never come back to me.

Well how about part of one?

One my father and I shared a liking for while he was still on this earth:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Here is a Poem by E.E.Cummings
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

And I am Now a Follower, and I will post this contest on my Sidebar :]

my favorite valentine's poems are from shakepeare--because my then-boyfriend, now husband, gave me beautiful leather bound edition for one valentines. Here's my favorite, and probably the best known, (my favorit because it's the one he read to me):
Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit impediments. Love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove:

O no! it is an ever-fixed mark

That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

William Shakespeare

I can't remember all the nice valentine's my DH has given me. But this year we were away in Mexico the week before and he bought me a lovely silver and multi colored cats eye necklace. Then on VD we went to church dinner and got to play in the "Old" Newlyweds game. It was fun even though we didn't win.

My fondest memory of a valentines gift was 14 years ago when I first met my fiance. We had met eachother at a dinner that some of our friends were having and he was nice enough to take me home, when he stopped at about 3 different 7-11's and finally came out with a single rose for me. That's when I fell in love.
Thanks for the entries and happy reading!

Valentine Chocolate

What do I love about chocolate?
What is it that makes it so cool?
It can be light or dark
Or so rich it makes me drool.
It can be full of nuts
Or have a center that tastes like wine.
It doesn't matter the flavor
As long as it is mine.
But I know my hubby likes it
And since I really care,
With Valentine's Day coming
I'll do my best to share.
