Book Review: Scales and Scars

Takar is a lion shifter warrior with a gentle heart. One fateful day in Africa left him scarred emotionally and physically, turning him into a monster. He tries to find peace by relocating to the coast and shutting out his inner lion, resigning himself to a life without love. But the fates have other plans.

Aria has never had it easy. The mermaid shifter’s mom died shortly after she was born, and her father is slowly dying after being poisoned by an oil spill. When Aria meets Takar, she knows he is her mate, but he doesn't seem to understand. Just as she might be getting through to him, the unthinkable happens. Can fate be so cruel as to bond her to someone responsible for her father's death?

Can their mate bond handle the pressure to join Land and Sea?

My Review

I really liked this book. The reimagined twist that the author took from The Little Mermaid and The Lion King was nice. I instantly got the references and liked seeing the refences throughout the book. While I love both and have read many books that reference The Little Mermaid; it was the Lion King one that I enjoyed more because I have only read like one or two other stories that were a retelling. In addition, to the fact that I felt the scars of Takar's story.

Instant connection is shared between Aria and Takar is strong. I felt the pull of the attraction of being fated mates. Yes, these two do share steamy scenes but the anguish and emotional trauma that will hit you in the heart. It was a bit more obvious with Takar that he was still processing past trauma.

Land and sea do mix and blend together in Scales and Scars.
