Book Review: Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases

Image
From the detective who found The Golden State Killer, a memoir of investigating America’s toughest cold cases and the rewards--and toll--of a life solving crime. I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don’t even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I’m drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can’t shake. Crime-solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me, for better or worse, to the point of obsession. People always ask how I am able to detach from the horrors of my work. Part of it is an innate capacity to compartmentalize; the rest is experience and exposure, and I’ve had plenty of both. But I had always taken pride in the fact that I can k...

The Woman Who Wasn't There

Image
Tania Head was like anyone else. Just a normal person trying to survive in the corporate world of America. Only that all changed on September 11, 2001. Tania became a 9/11 survivor, lost a loved one…her fiancé, David, and became a public figure of hope for other survivors. Tania helped to grow the World Trade Center Survivors’ Network and lead tours at ground zero. This went on for years until, the New York Times wanted to do a story on Tania. It was than that the truth was discovered. Tania was a fraud. She was never a 9/11 survivor. She was never engaged. The best part…Tania was attending school in Barcelona, Spain when the Twin Towers were attacked. It has been a few days since I finished this book and I am still in shock. I am still asking myself why would anyone want to fake being a 9/11 survivor or claim to be a survivor or any horrific accident for that matter. To be honest as I was reading this book, I was so in shock that this was true that I didn’t get mad. I was in mad shock...

After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival

I read an incredible story. I have been reading more non fiction books lately and have found some of them to be very powerful. After the Fire is one of those books. Read my review and you will see why. Also Hachette Book Group was nice enough to offer to give away 5 copies of this book to readers in either the US or Canada. My Review After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival is based on true events. It is under sad and unfortunate events that this story comes about. The day was January 19th, 2000, a day that no one will ever forget. On this fateful day a fire spread throughout the freshman dormitory halls of Seton Hall University. The fire claimed young three lives and injured many more. Robin Gaby Fisher tells the story of two room mates Shawn Simons and Alvaro Llanos and the angels of Saint Barnabas Hospital, who helped saved these two friends. After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival makes you feel raw, heart-wrenching emotions of sadness, joy and tr...
