The Girl Who Could Breathe Under Water

Image
When Kendra Brennan moves into her grandfather's old cabin on Hidden Lake, she has a problem and a plan. The problem? An inflammatory letter from A Very Disappointed Reader that's keeping her from writing her next novel as long as its claims go unanswered. The plan? To confront Tyler, her childhood best friend's brother--and the man who inspired the antagonist in her first book--in order to prove to herself that she told the truth as all good novelists should. What she discovers as she delves into the murky past is not what she expected. Facing Tyler isn't easy, but facing the truth of her failed friendship with his sister, Cami, may be the hardest thing she's ever had to do. Award-winning novelist Erin Bartels searches the heart with this lyrical exploration of how a friendship dies, how we can face the unforgiveable, and how even those who have been hurt can learn to love with abandon. My Review I was intrigued by the premise of this book. Yet, I am sad to repor

Book Review: Chasing the Darkness

Image
Chasing the Darkness is a story about vengeance and redemption and takes place in a land called Pandaren where there are two types of people - those with magic, Spectrals, and those without. Azrael, obsessed with revenge and power, undergoes a procedure giving him magic, but an unexpected side effect causes him to feel emotions he’s blocked for years. As an assassin and second in command of the Watch Guard, he has become a liability. Azrael is betrayed by his team and rescued by the people he’s hunted. He learns his beliefs and purpose are based on lies and has to choose the path of vengeance or the road to redemption. Chasing the Darkness entertains readers who enjoy character-driven stories with twists and turns. Chasing the Darkness is a fast-paced novel with magic, sword fights, and romance that keeps readers turning the page. The underlying themes, besides redemption, include forgiveness, sacrifice, and learning that one’s worth is not defined by one’s past. My Review I absolute

The Last Great American Tragedy

Blurb  As dictated in Plato's Symposium, Zeus separated humans out of fear, damning them to a life of searching, leaving them with a glimmer of hope, a memory, a longing for their original other half.   Cordelia, an esteemed author, meets her other half under the most unusual circumstances. Grieving her mother's death, she moves to the sleepy little city of Asheville to end her life. After a near successful drowning attempt, Doctor Locke saves her, thus starting a love affair that rivals the gods.   Both broken and troubled, the two hearts dance around each other in a shifting battle of willpower. But as Cordelia starts exhibiting the telltale signs of a body fading away, will the good doctor be able to keep her soul attached to this mortal coil, or will she force him to walk his life alone, never to be complete? My Review To be honest, when I read the premise, I was not really sure what to expect from this book. It read kind of like a Shakespearean meets Greek mythology but

Greg Zipper is a paranormal vlogger whose livelihood relies on his online popularity. When a fight between him and his girlfriend goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Greg purchases a dark web mystery box in hopes of restoring his audience’s faith in him and hitting one million subscribers. But when Greg opens the box, he gets much more than he bargained for, including a Boxer who’s determined to stop him from taking his loved ones for granted. Now Greg must do all he can to stop the Boxer, or else he’ll lose his livelihood—along with the woman he loves. My Review I have read a few books in play format. They are unique and can add an element to a story. I was drawn to this book first by the book cover and second by the concept of the story. I got both the audio and ebook versions of this book. Which I started out with the audio version.  When I got to the halfway point of the audio book, I realized that I could not remember a thing that had happened. Therefore, I read the ebook as I

Isabelle’s best friend invites her to attend an annual masquerade ball but fails to tell her about the dark secret surrounding the ball. Juggling two identities, contracts, secrets, lies, and passion will drive anyone crazy. The Veil is jam packed with constant twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat. My Review This is the third book I have read from author, V.B. Emanuele. Just like the other two books, she really infuses such life into her characters that I the reader become so invested in them, that they are a part of me. That is what happened with this book.  Isabelle and Valentino are great together. They may have started out as casual acquaintances but that changed fairly quickly the longer they spent in one another's company. You could say that the intensity went from a spark to f

Stranger Love

Blurb      Rose   They say you’ll have the time of your life at university, but it was the handsome stranger in a local bar who gave me mine. Our connection was instantaneous, our conversation littered with inappropriate teasing. And his kiss. Blew. My. Mind. Going home with him was never in doubt. The next day, he promised to call, but I never heard from him again. Trying not to feel rejected, I decided to look at my one night stand as an experience fitting of college life. The unexpected baby wasn’t part of the deal though. I wasn’t down for that particular experience. I’m a final year student and the timing is awful. But despite delivering babies for a living, Callum’s not happy about the pregnancy, making accusations and assumptions every time we meet.  He treats me as if I’m his enemy, and if he’s not careful he’ll make me one, pushing me away for good.     Callum   The green-eyed girl from the bar is standing in my hospital, looking at an ultrasound scan in her hands. Red Is My Heart

Image
How can you mend a broken heart? Do you write a letter to the woman who left you - and post it to an imaginary address? Buy a new watch, to reset your life? Or get rid of the jacket you wore every time you argued, because it was in some way ... responsible? Combining the wry musings of a rejected lover with playful drawings in just three colours - red, black and white - bestselling author of  The Red Notebook,  Antoine Laurain, and renowned street artist Le Sonneur have created a striking addition to the literature of unrequited love. Sharp, yet warm, whimsical and deeply Parisian, this is a must for all Antoine Laurain fans.   My Review This is not typically my kind of book but I really enjoyed it a lot. The poems really told stories of love lost. You could feel the anguish. Each story really spoke to me in a profound way. There is not one story/poem that I could pick as my favorite as I loved them all. Every reader who reads this book will relate in at least one of these stories. T
