Don't Call Me Cupcake

Image
There’s a very special kind of sweetness to life on Pine Cove Island . . .   Most families have a favorite recipe or two, handed down through generations. The Holloway women are a little different. Emma Holloway, like her grandmother before her, bakes wishes into her delicious cupcakes, granting the recipient comfort, sweet dreams, or any number of good things. It’s a strange gift, but it brings only happiness. Until gorgeous, smooth-talking newcomer Hunter Kane strolls into her shop, Fairy Cakes—and Emma makes the mistake of selling him not one, but three Sweet Success cupcakes. Hunter, it turns out, is opening a fancy new restaurant and bakery right on the waterfront—Emma’s competition. To make matters worse, the town committee has decided to split the upcoming summer festival contract between the two, forcing Emma to work with her nemesis. But she can’t afford to split her profits. The solution: create a recipe that will make Hunter leave town permanently. The Holloway c...

The Sea Beast Takes a Lover

Image
In this collection you can expect amorous sea monsters, ghosts of Catholic saints, and teenagers going about their merry way…without a head. But you can also expect emotional stories that express deep universal understandings and desires—a powerful juxtaposition of the everyday with the unimaginable. In “Bodies in Space” an extramarital affair is rudely interrupted by an alien abduction; in “Blunder-bus” a third grade class takes an ill-advised field-trip to a foundering time travel institute; and in my person favorite, “Our Fathers at Sea” Andreasen plays with the idea of ceremoniously tossing our elderly into the ocean rather than grappling with the reality of old age and death. My Review I was excited about the premise of this collection of stories. I was ready for the "weird". Yet, I read about the first three stories including the name sake story for this anthology. None of these stories peaked my interest. It was like I was going through the motions of reading but...

Daughters of Bad Men

Image
Jamie Rush understands what it takes to disappear because her parents taught her that long ago. Leveraging her knowledge of why and how people run from their own lives, Jamie has built a business based on bringing those in hiding back to answer for their actions. She takes pride in using her somewhat shady skills to work both inside and outside the law. When her estranged brother, Brian, calls and says his daughter is missing, Jaime initially turns down the case. Kristen has always been a bit wild, frequently dropping off the grid then showing up a few days later. But Brian swears this time is different, and even though Jamie vowed years ago to keep her conniving sibling at arm’s length, she can’t walk away if Kristen could be in real trouble. As Jamie begins digging into Kristen’s life, she uncovers her niece’s most guarded secrets. Uncovering the truth will put a target on Jamie’s back and endanger the lives of those she loves. My Review I liked this book. Jamie displays s...

The Other Mother

Image
When Daphne Marist and her infant daughter, Chloe, pull up the gravel drive to the home of Daphne’s new employer, it feels like they’ve entered a whole new world. Tucked in the Catskills, the stone mansion looks like something out of a fairy tale, its lush landscaping hiding the view of the mental asylum just beyond its border. Daphne secured the live-in position using an assumed name and fake credentials, telling no one that she’s on the run from a controlling husband who has threatened to take her daughter away. Daphne’s new life is a far cry from the one she had in Westchester where, just months before, she and her husband welcomed little Chloe. From the start, Daphne tries to be a good mother, but she’s plagued by dark moods and intrusive thoughts that convince her she’s capable of harming her own daughter. When Daphne is diagnosed with Post Partum Mood Disorder, her downward spiral feels unstoppable—until she meets Laurel Hobbes. Laurel, who also has a daughter named Chloe, is e...

The New Neighbors

Image
The Girl Before meets The Couple Next Door in a Hitchcockian thriller about a couple who moves into their dream neighborhood only to discover nothing is as it seems... The perfect couple. The perfect house. The perfect crime. Londoners Jack and Syd found their dream home: lots of space, a great location, and a friendly owner who wanted a young couple to have it. Everything is exactly what they hoped for when they move in--except Jack makes a disturbing discovery in the attic, and Syd begins to wonder about the girl next door. And they each keep the other in the dark. A mistake. Because someone has just been killed outside their back door, and now the police are watching them. This is their chance to prove they're innocent--or to get away with murder. Whose story do you believe? My Review If you enjoy psychological thrillers then you will enjoy this book. Mr. Lelic does not bring the bold in your face chills but a more subtle approach. One that slowly will have you que...

Bad Bachelor

Image
If one more person mentions Bad Bachelors to Reed McMahon, someone’s gonna get hurt. A PR whiz, Reed is known as an ‘image fixer’ but his womanizing ways have caught up with him. The prickly Brooklynite knows Reed is exactly the kind of guy she should avoid. But the library does need his help. As she reluctantly works with Reed, she realizes there’s more to a man than his reputation. Maybe, just maybe, Bad Bachelor #1 is THE one for her. My Review You know when they say that first impressions arte very important. Well in this case my first impression was great. I absolutely loved Darcy and Reed. Darcy is not your typical woman. She has tattoos and sass. Reed may be hot to trot but he is smart and underneath his suit is a good guy. Although, you may not get that impression from the reviews on app "Bad Bachelors". ...
