Book Review: Mayhem and the Mortal
One mission. One curse. No escape.
Zaira doesn’t want a hero. She needs a weapon.
To save her sister from a soul-devouring curse, she has to cross The Shallows—a nightmare landscape of ruined magic, shifting paths, and vicious creatures that eat people alive.
Her guide? Thane Valkor: sorcerer, assassin, walking red flag. His name clears rooms. His magic kills quietly. And whatever he’s really after, it’s not salvation.
He promises to help. He might even mean it.
But Zaira knows better than to trust a liar with a blade and ice in his veins.
She just doesn’t have a choice.
My Review
This is my first book that I have read by author, Shanora Williams. I loved this book so much that I am now on the hunt for other books by the author. The rich storyline and characters are two of the elements that really helped make this book. The other is the witty banter between the two main characters.
Zaira is a great sister. The lengths she goes to save her is very endearing. In addition to the fact that she puts her life on the line. While Zaira does show strength, she really would not have lasted if not for Thayne. As soon as I met Thayne, I liked him a lot, despite the gruff exterior that he projected. The witty barbs that Thayne and Zaira tossed back and forth with each other is very entertaining. When Zaira actually got Thayne to smile, I smiled too.
If you ever wanted to know what the hype is all about with romantasy books, then, you NEED to read this book! I was so swept into this story that I did not want it to end. A must read.
