STRANGE MEDICINE

Image
As I was reading this book I was telling my husband about all of the different techniques throughout the ages of time that the many physicians believed in for treating the many ailments that people had. For example: If you wanted to cure your teeth grinding the back in the 460BC era then you might have been instructed to sleep next to a human skull for seven days while kissing and licking it for the duration of the seven days. Another well known doctor was Dr. Benjamin Rush. Dr. Rush was really known for his treatment of the mentally ill. He would pour acid on the patient’s back and cut them with a knife. He would keep the patient’s wounds open for months or even years. He thought that this would smooth the progress of dispelling the discharge from the patient’s brain and in essence cure them. He also recommended starving the patients hearing that this helped wild elephants in India. My husband at one point turned to me and said “Why was I reading this book?” I told him becau...

Big Girl Panties is a fun summer read

Holly is flying back home. Her seat mate is a Greek god. This makes Holly feel really self aware about her body image. Holly is not over weight but again she is not a super model. Holly learns that the god has a name and his name is Logan. He is a personal trainer to the stars. He offers his services to Holly. Holly regrets Logan’s offer to train her in the beginning. However is starts to have second thoughts when she finds herself in compromising positions with Logan. I have not read many books by this author. What drew me to this book is that I have been working out a lot and so I wanted to read about Holly’s experience and it sounded like a fun time. After reading about Logan and how much “fun” Holly had with him, I might have to reconsider the whole idea of getting a personal trainer. Holly felt real to me. Her breakdown moment of weakness that I can relate to. Although, I have never gone to the extreme that Holly did. I like that Holly is a real person with a genuine hear...

All I have to say about this book is …Nerds rule!

Samuel Cooke is starting a new job as a teacher. One of the first people that Sam meets is the gym teacher, Greta Cassamajor. Just like part of her last name “major”, Greta is like a drill sergeant. Most of the teachers avoid Greta. Even Sam almost got his butt crewed up and handed back to him by Greta. Yet despite Greta’s frosty personality, Sam likes Greta. Things change when Sam takes a chance and asks Greta out on a date. To be honest I would not have given this book a second look if I did not have a chance to review it. Even though it meets one of my criteria’s of “new author”. I am glad that I did take a chance and read this book. All I have to say about this book is …Nerds rule! I thought that Greta reminded me of Sue Sylvester from Glee. She had that tough, sharp wit about her but on the inside she was hiding a caring, nice person. What drew me to Sam was his I can do anything attitude. Just because he had a disability did not make him any less of a person. The romance b...

The Condor Song

Buck Anderson is an environmentalist. He has found something of great importance. Something that will stop a big ski report from building. Something that someone is willing to kill for. While hiking Buck is shot at. Later on two hikers find Buck dead. Buck’s niece calls on Sean to help her. She and the Sierra Club need Sean’s help to fight the ski resort. Sean takes on the case before he learns that his old employer is defending the other side. I thought this was a good book. Despite never fully committing to the characters. There is no great surprise as to how this book will end. Early on I understood why the two sides were fighting so hard. I could see both sides and there pros and cons but of course I sided with Buck. His drive to protect the condors was important. This is why Sean fought so hard as he did as well. There was a lot of back and forth interaction with both sides. However the parts I liked the most was the legal drama in this book. Sean may not have been ...
