My Review
Annie has to be tough. She works around dangerous criminals. She never imagined that a ride with prisoners would turn into a forced proximity situation. Two of the criminals, Hunter and Ryker take Annie. Ryker is the leader and therefore has a bully attitude. Hunter brings moments of laughter with his joking persona. Yet, when it really mattered, both guys help Annie.
This novella is one SPICY read or in my case listen. I listened to the audiobook. Kylie Stewart is a new to me narrator. She did a wonderful job of voicing all three characters. I don't mind single narration when it is done right and, in this case, Kylie knocked it out of the park with her voice!
I used to think that I was better than him. I thrived at a private school for gifted children, and he barely made it through the public school system. I was smarter, and I didn’t miss an opportunity to let him know it. Then, I told a lie to get him in trouble and out of my way.
Turns out, karma is a bitch.
Five years later, my once oh so promising life is nothing more than a fading memory. I’ve hit rock bottom. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, fate has one more cruel twist in store for me.
Ryder
I hated her from the moment we met. My hate has only grown over the years. I lost everything because of her, went to jail and became the man I am today.
So, when she shows up at my club, unable to repay her debt, I can’t believe my luck. She owes me more than the five grand, and I’m going to enjoy making her pay.
My Review
Ok, first off, this book is not light. It does feels topics that could be sensitive to some readers, so be careful and take care of your mental health. Now on to the biggest trope. I definitely got big time "bully" vibes. Can we all agree that we "hate' to "love" Ryder.
There were many times when I wanted to slap Ryder or throw something at him. Just as I really wanted to yell at him, he would swoop in and save Penny. While Penny does seem to find herself in dangerous situations, they are not her fault. Penny is strong but even strong women need a little help every now and again.
Narrators Teddy Hamilton and Kylie Stewart both are amazing on the audiobook. Hearing Teddy's voice as Ryder...yum! Kylie brings it as Penny! If you are a fan of duet narrators, you will want to pick up this audiobook. Angsty. I really enjoyed this book. I started and finished the audiobook in one day.
