About Connie Corcoran Wilson
Connie (Corcoran) Wilson (MS + 30) graduated from the University of Iowa and Western Illinois University, with additional study at Northern Illinois, the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Chicago. She taught writing at six Iowa/Illinois colleges and has written for five newspapers and seven blogs, including Yahoo, which named her its 2008 Content Producer of the Year. She covers politics and entertainment and writes for The Movie Blog, QuadCities.com and her own blog, WeeklyWilson.com. She is a member of ITW (International Thriller Writers) and a member of IWPA (Illinois Women’s Press Association, Chicago chapter), which awarded her its Silver Feather Award in 2012 and 2014, MWA (Midwest Writers Association), AWP (American Writing Program) and MWC (Midwest Writing Center), which named her its Writer of the Year in 2010.
She has won numerous E-Lit awards, a NABE Pinnacle award, an ALMA (American Literary Merit Award), Lucky Cinda competition and two IWPA Silver Feather Awards (2012, 2014). Excerpt from KHAKI=KILLER, Chapter Fourteen: January 15,
2005, Saturday
A few minutes
passed. Declan Hunter returned, carrying
a 100-watt light bulb.
Kelly glanced at
the unconscious form of Heather. Heather
was passed out on the bunk across from her.
Kelly was too frightened to scream.
She had screamed for help and Heather had ended up unconscious on the
bunk next to her. Kelly made a conscious
decision to sit quietly and act as though she were not totally terrified. It was a difficult choice, but she could tell
that Declan Hunter was not “right” in the head. (If he ever had been).
Dec moved like an
automaton. He pushed a chair from along
the wall underneath the overhead fixture.
He climbed atop the chair, light bulb in hand. He removed the dark bulb, inserted the new
bulb. It lit up the dingy interior of
the cabin.
Kelly thought, How many lunatics does it take to screw in a
light bulb? Answer? One: Declan Hunter.
She saw the
vacant look on his face. Declan was
emotionless. Mentally absent. Strange. Weird.
Kelly noticed a
room approximately twelve feet from the foot of her bunk, although she could
only see a small part of it. It was a
bathroom. A sink was visible. Kelly’s eyes were still adjusting to the
gloom created mid-day by the boarded-up windows.
Finally, Kelly
decided she would calmly question her captor.
“What are you
doing, Mr. Hunter?”
It was a logical
question.
Declan Hunter
climbed down from the chair. He fixed
his attention on the young blonde girl handcuffed to the homemade
scaffolding. There were ready-made bunk
bed sets. But Declan Hunter wanted the
supportive material to be of metal, not wood.
He wanted to save money for the always cash-starved facility. And Declan wanted a metal rod or pole to
which handcuffs could be affixed.
Declan fixed a
baleful gaze on Kelly Carter.
“I don’t want you
girls to leave me. Everyone always
leaves me. I want you to stay.”
Kelly was not sure
what she should say to something so obviously loony. Just the way Declain Hunter looked when he
said it made it clear that he was deranged.
His hair was disheveled. His
hands shook. His eyes had an absent
look. It was as though he were
physically there, but psychologically, he was a million miles away. Periodically, a sound from outside the
still-open door would cause him to twitch.
Finally, he approached the door.
Slammed it shut, causing Kelly to involuntarily jump. She was trying to get as far away from this
madman as possible.
