After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival is based on true events. It is under sad and unfortunate events that this story comes about. The day was January 19th, 2000, a day that no one will ever forget. On this fateful day a fire spread throughout the freshman dormitory halls of Seton Hall University. The fire claimed young three lives and injured many more. Robin Gaby Fisher tells the story of two room mates Shawn Simons and Alvaro Llanos and the angels of Saint Barnabas Hospital, who helped saved these two friends.

As for an event that changed someone's life...I suppose this is obvious, but my mom has a kidney disease and her sister donated one of her kidneys to my mom...which helped her health a lot.

My aunt recently came down with cancer, late stages, unpreventable. Her husband, uncle by marriage, decided to quit his job and take care of her in her last days. He lost his family house because of it, and was grievously aware the entire process. Was told explicitly the symptoms she would go through, and watched them occur before his eyes. She disliked hospitals and funerals and he was gracious enough to keep her home in her last days of sufferance, keep her close and as happy as she could be. No funeral, but a celebration of her life when all was done. She died around Christmas, but he restrained from telling us till after, so as not to sadden our celebrations. Makes me sad to remember it.
As for a life-changing story...my father contracted polio in high school and was paralyzed completely and put into an iron lung. He regained most of his muscle usage but for his whole right arm and upper left arm were permanently paralyzed. He had to relearn how to write with his left hand and learn how to do everything with very limited mobility. He became the most sensitive, loving, kind person you could ever meet. He was a peacemaker and everyone who met him was touched and changed by knowing him. His good muscles degenerated over the years because they worked extra hard to compensate for the "dead" muscles and he became so sad and down. He lost his life about two months ago and while it's been the most painful thing I've ever lived through, I know that he's at peace and no longer suffering. But I miss him so much.
