Book Review: The Secrets of Roan Island

An invitation she can’t refuse. A secret he doesn’t want her to uncover.
She refuses to leave. He’ll risk everything to protect her.

Outcast from her academic peers and at risk of losing her position at Essik College, Professor Ruby Rose appeals to the reclusive philanthropist Hammish Roan by asking for a grant. What she receives is a cryptic invitation to stay at Roan Island for the winter holiday. No matter how much the eerie mansion unnerves her, access to the Roans’ coveted library is worth facing her unsettling fears.

Mysterious and enigmatic, Noah Roan, the oldest of Hammish Roan’s sons, knows exactly what happens to women who come to their isolated estate. Especially those who stay until the Winter Solstice. No matter how hard he tries to get Ruby to leave, the infuriating and alluring woman insists on staying.

In a clash of will and desire, Ruby and Noah struggle to fight their attraction to each other. But their connection reveals dark and sinister secrets that draw the attention of the maniacal patriarch. Can they work together to out maneuver Hammish Roan, or will he destroy them both?

My Review

I really like the gothic setting of this story. It really set the mood for the story and is a big part of what I enjoyed about the story. The mystery surrounding Noah, Shemaiah, his brother and the rest of his family. Which speaking of Noah and Shemaiah, they are opposites. Where Noah is grumpy, Shemaiah is jovial. Yet, they balance each other out.

I like the slow burn that Noah and Ruby shared. The spice is not in your face and their relationship is not the main focal point of this story. The authors stroked a nice balance between the main storyline and the romance.

The first half of the story is more of the buildup to the second half, where the action happens. The mystery surrounding Noah and his family is very intriguing. I look forward to reading Shemaiah's story next.
