After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival

I read an incredible story. I have been reading more non fiction books lately and have found some of them to be very powerful. After the Fire is one of those books. Read my review and you will see why. Also Hachette Book Group was nice enough to offer to give away 5 copies of this book to readers in either the US or Canada.

My Review

After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival is based on true events. It is under sad and unfortunate events that this story comes about. The day was January 19th, 2000, a day that no one will ever forget. On this fateful day a fire spread throughout the freshman dormitory halls of Seton Hall University. The fire claimed young three lives and injured many more. Robin Gaby Fisher tells the story of two room mates Shawn Simons and Alvaro Llanos and the angels of Saint Barnabas Hospital, who helped saved these two friends.

After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival makes you feel raw, heart-wrenching emotions of sadness, joy and triumphant. After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival is such a powerful book that it is beyond words on how to explain it. I credit this fact dooly to Robin Gaby Fisher’s talent as not only an author and writer but as an amazing story teller. I was blown away from the first moment I picked this book up to read it. If Mrs. Fisher’s goal was to show how with lots of strength, determination as well as setting a goal for yourself you can achieve anything; then Mrs. Fisher accomplished that with After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival. If there is ever one book you must read in your life then it has got to be After the Fire: A True Story of Friendship and Survival by Robin Gaby Fisher.

As for an event that changed someone's life...I suppose this is obvious, but my mom has a kidney disease and her sister donated one of her kidneys to my mom...which helped her health a lot.

Hi, I remember when this actually happened. My oldest son went to Purdue last year. It was his first year of college and he lived in the dorms. He liked the school; but he contracted pleurisy within one week of being there, had a horrible room mate and was homesick. He just began his second year at a wonderful university near us. He needed that first year to learn more about himself. Thanks, Cindi

Cheerful.

My aunt recently came down with cancer, late stages, unpreventable. Her husband, uncle by marriage, decided to quit his job and take care of her in her last days. He lost his family house because of it, and was grievously aware the entire process. Was told explicitly the symptoms she would go through, and watched them occur before his eyes. She disliked hospitals and funerals and he was gracious enough to keep her home in her last days of sufferance, keep her close and as happy as she could be. No funeral, but a celebration of her life when all was done. She died around Christmas, but he restrained from telling us till after, so as not to sadden our celebrations. Makes me sad to remember it.
Great review! I have been hearing good things about this book. Please enter me!

This sounds heartbreaking but yet heartwarming. I know I would really enjoy reading it.

As for a life-changing story...my father contracted polio in high school and was paralyzed completely and put into an iron lung. He regained most of his muscle usage but for his whole right arm and upper left arm were permanently paralyzed. He had to relearn how to write with his left hand and learn how to do everything with very limited mobility. He became the most sensitive, loving, kind person you could ever meet. He was a peacemaker and everyone who met him was touched and changed by knowing him. His good muscles degenerated over the years because they worked extra hard to compensate for the "dead" muscles and he became so sad and down. He lost his life about two months ago and while it's been the most painful thing I've ever lived through, I know that he's at peace and no longer suffering. But I miss him so much.

I'd love to be entered for this one. I vaguely remember the story. Something similar happened when my son was attending school at the University of Mississippi. Fire broke out in one of the fraternities and several young men were killed. The most awesome story from that horror was the tale of one of the boys who died. Before he was killed, he ran in and out, waking people up to save them. Then he was overcome by smoke and became one of the fire's victims. He could have easily saved himself, but because of his bravery fewer people died.

Following this story in the newspaper because I live not far from Seton Hall, I would love to read this book. Working in a local high school, this is the type of reading that our students can learn from. Include me in this contest.
