Cold Shadows

Ok, so fans of a good mystery thriller should check out this book. I have never heard of Jeff Critser. I still would not have, if it was not for the fact that I had a chance to review this book. This would have been sad as again I state that this is a book that fans like me who enjoy mystery thrillers will like.
This book I want to say is simple but also complex at the same time. If this makes sense? Ok, so what I mean by this is that it is simple in that there are no flashy twists but complex in the layers of intrigue, mystery, and the characters that Mr. Critser brings to this book. His former background really helps lend an upper hand to him in his knowledge of technology.

Outlaw: Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and the Renegades of Nashville

Book Summary

Waylon Jennings. Willie Nelson. Kris Kristofferson. Three renegade musicians. Three unexpected stars. Three men who changed Nashville and country music forever.

By the late 1960s, Nashville, Tennessee, was firmly established as the center of the booming country music industry and home to what was known as the Nashville Sound, characterized by slick production and adherence to an increasingly overused formula. But the city was changing. Young people from all over the country were streaming into the bohemian West End and colliding with three trailblazing artists who would soon rock the foundations of Nashville's music business.

Surrounded by the street vibes of the West End's burgeoning underground scene and the outlaw protest tradition of Nashville's unlikely civil rights leaders and antiwar protestors, Waylon, Willie, and Kris began resisting the unspoken rules of Nashville's music-making machine and instead forged their own creative paths. Their music, personal and not easily categorized, was more in the vein of rock acts like the Allman Brothers and Bob Dylan, and it communi- cated a stark rawness and honesty that would influence artists of all genres for decades to come.

Studded with a diverse secondary cast including Johnny Cash, Rodney Crowell, Kinky Friedman, Billy Joe Shaver, and others, Streissguth's new book brings to life an incredible chapter in musical history and reveals for the first time a surprising outlaw zeitgeist in Nashville. Based on extensive research and probing interviews with key players, what emerges is a fascinating glimpse into three of the most legendary artists of our times and the definitive story of how they changed music in Nashville and everywhere.

My review
I picked up a copy of this book because I am a fan of country music. I grew up on it, so I wanted to read this book as these are three men that are staples in this industry. So I was excited to read this book. Well I do have to say that it is packed full of information, however, I found that sometimes too much information is not always a good thing. Especially if you do not break up the information some with more personality. This is what I was hoping and looking for in this book...personality. I wanted to get to the meat of these men and hear from them more and the special stories they had. Not really to read a book where I felt that I could gather this information from the internet. Sadly, I grew bored of this book and put it down and walked away from it.

The Eternal Nazi: From Mauthausen to Cairo, the Relentless Pursuit of SS Doctor Aribert Heim

Ok, not that I am rooting for violence but I did think that this book would go into details more about Dr. Heim's procedures and his crimes. I thought that this book would focus on Dr. Heim's time in the concentration camp. Instead if focused more on the time span from when Dr. Heim escaped the camp and Police investigator Alfred Aedtner's hunt to find him.

The investigation was intriguing. It was amazing how Dr. Heim could be easily missed by the authorities. It is not like he really was hiding out that well. Well not in my opinion. He was able to do so because of all of the miscommunication or sloppy investigating. If it was not for people like Alfred not willing to give up then criminals would be able to get away with a lot more back in this time period. This book did more along quickly as it spanned time periods. A interesting look into history and events that should not be forgotten for the people who lived it.

The Harm in Asking

I wanted to read this book because it sounded like a good time with tons of laughs. I mean if you saw this book cover you would expect nothing less. However I was sadden by this book. I hardly laughed. Some of the situations that the author may have thought was funny and the reader like me was supposed to laugh at was more awkward like a blind date, creepy like a stalker, or just plain sad.

There were times where I even skipped chapters because I thought the subject title would be more interesting and funnier. Not so much. While I do appreciate the author sharing a unscripted look into her life growing up, I wished it was happier and not so much time spent in detail about everything. For example do I really need to read about several pages worth of how Sara went to the bathroom and her time playing with dolls that she thought up while in the bathroom. Although, the conversations that Sara had with the dolls were funny.

Redeployment

Book Summary

Phil Klay's Redeployment takes readers to the frontlines of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, asking us to understand what happened there, and what happened to the soldiers who returned.  Interwoven with themes of brutality and faith, guilt and fear, helplessness and survival, the characters in these stories struggle to make meaning out of chaos.

In "Redeployment", a soldier who has had to shoot dogs because they were eating human corpses must learn what it is like to return to domestic life in suburbia, surrounded by people "who have no idea where Fallujah is, where three members of your platoon died."  In "After Action Report", a Lance Corporal seeks expiation for a killing he didn't commit, in order that his best friend will be unburdened.  A Morturary Affairs Marine tells about his experiences collecting remains—of U.S. and Iraqi soldiers both.  A chaplain sees his understanding of Christianity, and his ability to provide solace through religion, tested by the actions of a ferocious Colonel.  And in the darkly comic "Money as a Weapons System", a young Foreign Service Officer is given the absurd task of helping Iraqis improve their lives by teaching them to play baseball.  These stories reveal the intricate combination of monotony, bureaucracy, comradeship and violence that make up a soldier's daily life at war, and the isolation, remorse, and despair that can accompany a soldier's homecoming.

Redeployment is poised to become a classic in the tradition of war writing.  Across nations and continents, Klay sets in devastating relief the two worlds a soldier inhabits: one of extremes and one of loss.  Written with a hard-eyed realism and stunning emotional depth, this work marks Phil Klay as one of the most talented new voices of his generation.

My Review

I did not give this book a second thought when I saw the chance to read it. This is because it is military related. Well I have to say this collection of short stories really brings the human aspect of the men and women that serve in the armed forces. Mr. Klay takes the readers on journeys that will leave them feelings grateful to these brave souls. Mr. Klay holds nothing back in these stories. Warning as there is a lot of strong language used, especially the "f" word. Reading this stories, I felt the emotions that the people were going through. It is for this reason that it did make it hard at times to read these stories. In fact, I had to put this book down and regroup and then dive back in again. So for anyone that enjoys reading military stories then you should pick up a copy of this book today.

Providence is a instant winner! One of the best books of 2014.

Becky just wanted a few moments to herself to read and hide from her father. She did not mean to burn down the family barn. Becky packs her bags and leaves. She hops a train and finds a baby girl left in a duffel bag. Becky knows how to care for a baby thanks to her siblings. The train stops at Watson's Grove, Georgia. Becky figures this is a good place to stop until it is safe to go back home.

Providence is a instant winner! One of the best books of 2014. I would group author, Lisa up there with Jodi Thomas and Robyn Carr. Two of my many authors. Lisa brought she life to the characters in this book. They felt more like family then they did people in a story.

Rosie is an angel. I almost cried during a certain part. I don't want to give it away. I absolutely loved Baby Girl aka Georgia. She stole my heart. Then there is Becky, John, and the rest of the people in Watson's Grove. The only bad part about this book is when I finished the last word and was finished with the book. I did not want it to end. I tried to savor every moment of this book.

Recon Marine Ethan Card is in love with Tuyen. However Tuyen is part of the North Vietnamese Communist group, who's brother just happens to be the leader. It would not be as bad if it was not for the fact that Ethan and Tuyen are living during a time of war where the Americans and Vietnamese are fighting each other. Tuyen is not exempt. She has killed many Americans but at the order of her brother. He is a sadist who hates Tuyen. Ethan is a good guy who finds himself in a situation as the scape goat for a evil rogue CIA agent. Ethan realizing how dire the situation is, escapes with Tuyen through the jungle on the ride of their lives.

Running with the Enemy is the second book I have read from Mr. Lofthouse. The first was My Splendid Concubine. Mr. Lofthouse really writes with such passion no matter the topic he is writing about. For example in this book, Mr. Lofthouse holds nothing bad. It can get pretty visceral with the characters and their emotions. Also, warning as it does get graphic in regards to rape, killings, and language. So if you can not handle any of these three things than this is not the book for you. However, if you are not easiliy offended by these things then you should check this book out as it will have you rooting for the good guys the whole time. Plus, it is a really quick read that sucks you in until the end.

Read Chapter One.
Praise for Running With the Enemy:
Lloyd Lofthouse describes his book Running with the Enemy as a memoir that evolved into fiction. As a Vietnam veteran who had seen and experienced enough to leave him with post traumatic stress disorder, he wrote this book it seems to come to terms with all he experienced in Vietnam. The book became fiction, an action novel with a strong romance component.

Overall it rings true of war and what it was like to serve in Vietnam. Much of the book details the fighting, the casualties and the heartbreak and the trauma experienced by the soldiers. The book also takes you on a dizzying journey when the lovers Tuyen and Ethan flee to other countries in Southeast Asia – Laos, Cambodia, Bangkok, Thailand ,and Burma (Myanmar).

For those who would like to get a sense of what combat was really like, this is an excellent book, which began as a memoir of Vietnam.“- Book Dilettante

“I found Running with the Enemy captivating and well worth reading and enjoyed such a different type of historical novel from Mr. Lofthouse than his previous. Since Mr. Lofthouse is a former Marine and Vietnam veteran, I am sure he drew from some of his personal experiences and I shudder to think of some of these experiences.”- M. Denise C.

”Running With the Enemy is a gut-wrenching page-turner at once a historical rendering of the Vietnam-American war, a suspense-thriller involving the framing of an innocent man forced to go on the run, and a passionate love story.  As an historical novel, it renders an intricate tapestry of the era, the geography, and the several cultures in confrontation at that time. As a suspense-thriller it grips on page one and keeps your heart racing page after page with hardly a paragraph of relief. As a war story, it depicts war as the bloody, hell that it is–a place in which the mettle of the honorable is tested and honed in the same landscape where sociopaths thrive and reach the heights of power and influence.   As a love story, it portrays the way a bond between two hearts can transcend race, religion, politics, national identity and family loyalty, defying all convention, tradition, prejudice and law to claim their right to have each other.

The characters are all deftly drawn and believable and if they exist beyond a page or two they will leave their mark on the reader who has come to care about them whether it is to love them, admire them, hate them or simply be amused by them.  I can wholeheartedly recommend Running With the Enemy as a story that rewards the time and effort invested. Its impact will linger long after the last page is turned.”-Joystory

“Running with the Enemy was everything and more than I was expecting. First off, the way Lloyd had everything under control from the plot and setting to the character developments and the historical elements that were added. Everything was extremely vivid, as if I was experiencing it first-hand.

Now talking about the extremely sexual love affair between Ethan and Tuyen felt so real that I actually cried at times throughout reading Lloyd’s Running with the Enemy. Speaking of crazy relationships, that Victor Ortega man. I really didn’t like him from the start, but who likes bad guys?
Running with the Enemy is an adventure that definitely isn’t suitable for younger children, but mainly for adults due to the extreme sex and violence. With that being said, I absolutely LOVED Lloyd’s novel and I honestly can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.”-A Book and Latte

About Lloyd Lfthouse:

Lloyd Lofthouse, a former U.S. Marine and Vietnam veteran, served in Vietnam as a field radio operator in 1966. Back home, Lloyd was a heavy drinker until 1981, never talked about the war and suffered from PTSD. In the early 1980s, he confronted his demons by writing about his war experiences in an MFA program.
Running with the Enemy started as a memoir and then evolved into fiction.
His short story, A Night at the “Well of Purity”, named a finalist of the 2007 Chicago Literary Awards, was based on an event Lloyd experienced in Vietnam.
His novel My Splendid Concubine has earned ten honorable mentions in general fiction—a few examples: the 2008 London Book Festival; 2009 San Francisco Book Festival; 2009 Los Angeles Book Festival, and the 2012 New York Book Festival, etc.
In 1999, his wife, Anchee Min, the author of the memoir Red Azalea, a book that was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1994, introduced Lloyd to Robert Hart, the real-life character of My Splendid Concubine.
After an honorable discharge from the U.S. Marines in 1968, Lloyd went to college on the GI Bill to earn a BA in journalism, and then worked days as a public school teacher for thirty years (1975 – 2005) in addition to nights and weekends as a maître d’ in a Southern California nightclub called the Red Onion (1980-1982).

Hush Little Baby

Jillian had the perfect life. She had a handsome husband, who was a good father to their two children, Drew and Addie. Only Jillian did not have the perfect life. When the doors closed, Gordon was a monster. He abused Jillian. She and their children lived in fear. She knew it was only a matter of time before Gordon killed her. Thus she had no choice but to run for her life and her children's lives. IF she stops running, Gordon will find them.

I absolutely loved this book. Although, it was difficult to read. This is due to the subject matter of abusive. Not just physical but also, emotional, and psychological abusive. No one...man or women or child should have to put with up with abusive. However, I was fighting along side of Jillian the whole time. The emotions and her acts that she displayed in this story really made her seem more like a real person then just a character in a book.

I read the reading guide questions in the back of the book and there was one that really made me go that is a good question. It is "Had Addie not gotten sick, how do you think the story might have played out?" My answer to this question is...If Addie had not gotten sick than the ending to this book would have been different. I would like to say that if she had not gotten sick then there would be no happy ending. I can imagine how it would have ending differently and I would have still been ok with it but not as satisfied.

The Cruelty Book Tour

My review

Gwendolyn Bloom is seventeen. She lost her mother when she was young. It is only her father and her. Gwen is very bright. She can speak in five different languages. This is thanks to her father's job at the Bureau of Diplomatic Security. However there is also a down side to Gwen's father's job and that is danger as Gwen learns. Two agents come to the door to inform Gwen that her father is missing. Gwen is not the type of person to just sit back and wait. She springs into action racing to Paris to find her father.

I really like Gwen. She is a no-nonsense type of gal. She is very independent and someone that will be a real force to watch out for as she gets older. This book is a quick read due to all the action and good characters. I liked that this book was told in the first person. It brought me in more into the story and helped bring me closer to Gwen. The love she has for her father is very clear as she fights hard to find him. She takes on some of the most dangerous people. You better grab your passport as you go jet setting all over the world from New York, to Paris, Berlin, and Prague.
