The Nature of Small Birds

Image
In 1975, three thousand children were airlifted out of Saigon to be adopted into Western homes. When Mindy, one of those children, announces her plans to return to Vietnam to find her birth mother, her loving adopted family is suddenly thrown back to the events surrounding her unconventional arrival in their lives. Though her father supports Mindy's desire to meet her family of origin, he struggles privately with an unsettling fear that he'll lose the daughter he's poured his heart into. Mindy's mother undergoes the emotional rollercoaster inherent in the adoption of a child from a war-torn country, discovering the joy hidden amid the difficulties. And Mindy's sister helps her sort through relics that whisper of the effect the trauma of war has had on their family--but also speak of the beauty of overcoming. Told through three strong voices in three compelling timelines,  The Nature of Small Birds  is a hopeful story that explores the meaning of family far beyond ...

Book Review: Untamed Devil

Image
I'm not ready to be a single dad... I had my life all figured out. Hockey. A revolving door of women. No strings. No worries. Until my sister runs off with a man she's just met and leaves my nine-year-old niece in my living room with nothing but a backpack, a stuffed snake named Leo, and a broken heart. I need help. Elle Hurst was only supposed to be in my life for one night--a curvy distraction with a big heart and a wicked sense of humor. But she's volunteered to watch Chloe while she's in town, and I have no choice but to let her. It can't last. She has an expiration date, a life to get back to in Savannah, and I don't do relationships. I know people don't stick around no matter how much you want them to--it's a lesson I've been taught my whole life. I won't risk losing my heart...or will I?   My Review What a yummy, quick read. Untamed Devil is right. Tag is a handsome devil. Although, Elle is a bit cheeky herself. While, I did love these t...

Book Review: Starost

Image
Two misfits, brought together by destiny. Minerva Vlahos is a mysterious winged being, fleeing those intent on finding out who she really is. Damon Nikolaidis has died more times than he can count, reincarnating each time in a new body. When their paths cross, their lives become intrinsically linked. But will the fickle whim of fate draw them together or tear them apart? My Review Minerva and Damon have known each other for decades. Each time at various ages, time periods, and as different people. Oh, did I mention that Damon is a body hopper. Every time that he dies, he is reincarnated into a different body.  This book is a joint effort by authors, Summer Davis and Kiley Muller. I thought the authors did a good job of writing this book as I could not tell where one stopped and the next one picked up or which was which voice. It was as if one author wrote the book. So for this factor, this is a plus in my book.  This is a very quick read. It is a story that you could ge...

Book Review: War Within

Image
Running an entire empire is no easy task for anyone, not even Don Giovanni Rovati. While he is focused on the storm brewing with another family, a much more sinister war is happening within his own. Jealousy, power, and the promise of money are enough to make anyone crazy. One woman will stop at nothing to ruin him. While he is starting to fall for her, she has other plans. One slip up causes her to be targeted by those around Giovanni, and he is now fighting to protect the woman who is plotting his demise. Not everyone is who they claim to be in the dark world of this life. Sometimes you have to kill your own blood to save yourself in the end, and sometimes you have to go through tribulations before you can have your happy ending. Follow the Rovati Family on their journey to save their family from the war within. This book contains extremely mature and dark themes. Some content may be disturbing for certain readers. My Review Don Giovanni Rovati, boss of the Rovati Crime Family. He an...

Book Review: The Role

Image
Rebuild. That’s Markus’ plan after a disastrous role and explosive public breakup with the girl he thought was The One. The bit part he originally agreed to take on after losing a bet now seems like his last opportunity to pull his career back from the brink. When he walks onto the set, he finds a TV show on the verge of cancellation and the paparazzi circling like vultures watching for what—or who—he’ll try to do next. When Markus is introduced to the director’s muse and the show’s on-location assistant producer, Alina, sparks start to fly and the two strike up a tentative friendship among the lights and cameras of the gossipy set. The ambitious and hard-working Alina has zero interest in getting sucked into Markus’ celebrity gossip drama, but she may not have a choice as one disaster after another befalls the set. A chance screen test and some serious groveling by the show’s director leads to Markus and Alina taking on major roles in a desperate attempt to save the show from ne...
