Don't Call Me Princess

A children's picture book which takes down the concept of 'princess'. A sassy child narrator chooses six well-known fairy tales involving princesses. With simple rhyme and lively pictures she takes the stories apart with incredulous humour and charm. This is a book to inspire children of all ages and adults to to think beyond the superficial.

Well-known cartoonist Kate Evans takes a punchy pop at six 'classic' fairytales: The Princess and the Pea, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid.


My Review


What a fun and enlighten book. There is so much talk about female empowerment that this is an appropriate book for today's modern world. Cartoonist, Kate Evans features some of the most beloved fairy tales and gives them new endings. There is the Princess and the Pea, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, and The Little Mermaid to name a few.

The reoccurring theme that Kate presents to girls is that it is ok to be strong, independent, set your own rules, and girls don't need a knight or Prince Charming to save them. They can save themselves. Many professions thought to be male dominant can be female orientated as well. Examples: Astronaut, Brain Surgeon, Engineer, Carpenter, and Preacher are a few professions. The possibilities are endless. So don't call me a Princess, I want to be a leader.
