Edge of Yesterday

When thirteen-year-old geek-girl Charley Morton decides to build what she believes is Leonardo da Vinci's design for a time machine for the middle school science fair, she has two thoughts in mind: to win first prize and to travel back in time to meet her idol, Leonardo. Her goal: to find out how the Renaissance artist, engineer, scientist, musician, anatomist, and inventor managed to do it all. My Review I was all about checking out this book. I am a fan of STEM. Although, I did not end up going into a career based on STEM; I do have a degree in Computer Engineering. STEM is a great program for young girls. The message is to help promote young women into becoming engineers. Charley is a nice girl. Her interest in math, science, etc. is infectious. Charley's hero being Da Vinci is appropriate. He was brilliant. Plus, when you meet your hero it is a nice surprise. While, I liked this story, I did find that I struggled to find a strong connection to the characters. Addi

Daisy Jones & The Six

Image
Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now. Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend. The making of that legend is chronicled in this rivet

Hunting Annabelle

Image
Sean Suh is done with killing. After serving three years in a psychiatric prison, he’s determined to stay away from temptation. But he can’t resist Annabelle—beautiful, confident, incandescent Annabelle—who alone can see past the monster to the man inside. The man he’s desperately trying to be. Then Annabelle disappears. Sean is sure she’s been kidnapped—he witnessed her being taken firsthand—but the police are convinced that Sean himself is at the center of this crime. And he must admit, his illness has caused him to “lose time” before. What if there’s more to what happened than he’s able to remember? Though haunted by the fear that it might be better for Annabelle if he never finds her, Sean can’t bring himself to let go of her without a fight. To save her, he’ll have to do more than confront his own demons… He’ll have to let them loose. A chilling, deeply suspenseful page-turner set in the 1980s, Hunting Annabelle is a stunning debut that will leave you breathless to the very end

The Death of Vultures

Image
Meg Storm has stepped in it. After becoming entangled within an industry as nefarious as it is criminal, she becomes swept under the riptide in a lurid world of drugs and drug money. With law enforcement at a loss about the island’s escalating trafficking of drugs, authorities opt to use unorthodox tactics. After her daughter, Lily, dies from an apparent heroin overdose, and then her husband, the same way, Meg has nothing left to lose. She transforms herself from housewife into fighting phenom. Will she become a victim, a vigilante, or both? For Meg, nothing is as it seems. My Review I liked this book a lot. Meg turned into a fighter/survivor by the end of the story. In the beginning, Meg was a mother who had lost her daughter. Her whole world crumbled down around her. She lashed out at her husband; who in turn left her. What Meg didn't know was that her husband was doing his own investigation into the daughter of their daughter. Let's just say "curiosity killed

An Unexplained Death

Image
An Unexplained Death is an obsessive investigation into a mysterious death at the Belvedere—a once-grand hotel—and a poignant, gripping meditation on suicide and voyeurism “The poster is new. I notice it right away, taped to a utility pole. Beneath the word ‘Missing,’ printed in a bold, high-impact font, are two sepia-toned photographs of a man dressed in a bow tie and tux.” Most people would keep walking. Maybe they’d pay a bit closer attention to the local news that evening. Mikita Brottman spent ten years sifting through the details of the missing man’s life and disappearance, and his purported suicide by jumping from the roof of her own apartment building, the Belvedere. As Brottman delves into the murky circumstances surrounding Rey Rivera’s death—which begins to look more and more like a murder—she contemplates the nature of and motives behind suicide, and uncovers a haunting pattern of guests at the Belvedere, when it was still a historic hotel, taking their own lives on th
