The Terror comes to AMC for TV!

Image
AMC, home of "The Walking Dead," is planning to bring a different kind of horror story to TV screens with "The Terror." The Terror is the name of a 2007 novel by American author Dan Simmons. The novel is a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin's lost expedition of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror to the Arctic to force the Northwest Passage in 1845–1848. In the novel, while Franklin and his crew are plagued by starvation and scurvy and forced to contend with mutiny and cannibalism, they are stalked across the bleak Arctic landscape by a monster. The characters featured in The Terror are almost all actual members of Franklin's crew, whose unexplained disappearance has warranted a great deal of speculation. The main characters in the novel include Sir John Franklin, commander of the expedition and captain of Erebus, Captain Francis Crozier, captain of Terror, Dr Harry D.S Goodsir, and Captain James Fitzjames. In the final chapters of the book, Si...

The Madman’s Daughter is mad, crazy good!

Image
Juliet Moreau is the daughter of Dr. Moreau. Dr. Moreau is a brilliant doctor and was considered a respected member of the community. That is until his latest science experiments were discovered. Now, Juliet is part of a cleaning crew at the university. After an incident, Juliet needs to make a new start and quickly. After learning that her father is alive and experimenting on an island, Juliet makes her way to the island. Once there Juliet is met face to face with her father’s projects. Juliet must make a decision…stay or leave? I absolutely love when a book actually turns out to be just as great as it promises to me. That book is The Madman’s Daughter. I devoured this book. I both was upset in horror by Juliet’s father and also intrigued by him. Mad because his “science projects” were more inhumane then just for science. Yet, I was very intrigued by what Juliet’s father was doing and the strange combinations that he put together. As the story progressed, it got more entert...

Review by Nancy Daniella Landau was a lovely Jewish girl in New York who is adored by her father and Nana, loved by her sister and friends but clueless when it comes to romance. Family keeps bringing over “such a nice boy” for her to meet but she was far more into passing the Bar than dating. Then her father met a “matchmaker”. In walks Jacob Liebowitz whom her father insists is “the perfect man. He has a good job, a new loft apartment and prospects. Marriage follows and Danielle quickly realizes the mistake she has made. She gives marriage her all but nothing satisfies Jacob. He must be in control. Danielle tries to talk to her father about her unhappiness but he tells her to go home and be a good wife. Nothing changes until, one night, Jacob really crosses the line and Danielle goes to her grandmother. She gets enough money to leave and, leave she does. Intertwined with Danielle’s heartbreak is the story of another young Jewish girl named Rose. Rose lived in Austria in WWII and ...

In his freelance capacity Jordan Gulok can do things—like tracking and on occasion killing malefactors—that are beyond the authority of the uniformed services. Jordan has an expense account and liberty to travel throughout the U.S. In turn, the U.S. government has plausible deniability should he ever get caught stretching or violating the law. Jordan’s current assignment involves stopping a lethal international group who’s manufacturing illegal and sometimes toxic pharmaceuticals and selling them to victims in Africa, Asia, Europe and America. In one of the worst blizzards in New York City’s history, subways, buses and taxis become useless. Even fire trucks and police cars are rendered immobile. But for Jordan cold weather is only a minor obstacle; after all, he grew up hunting polar bear and reindeer on ice and snow. His targets are managing a multi-billion dollar business that has killed thousands, and they soon become aware of him as their Enemy Number One. Jordan usually hunts al...

Lottie Barrett Lives (Again)

Image
Review by Nancy Okay. Here’s the deal: you’re thirteen, your first girlfriend’s best friend thinks she’s a witch and it’s Halloween night. Already you’re getting the picture. Maybe Charlene really was a witch because she tried to raise a girl their age who had died a long time ago and the next morning in school there was a new student – Lottie Barrett. Hmmmmm. Is she Charlene’s cousin like she says? Where are Charlene and her mother? They sure aren’t in town but Lottie is staying at their house. The one adult they confided in is now dead by suicide (yeah, riiiight.) Lottie seems a bit…distracted. The kids are worried. The adults seem to think they’ve made up a great joke. But what if Lottie is the girl Charlene tried to raise? What happens then? This YA story is written quite well. We have teenage angst (love that word) and adult disbelief. We have girl argument6s, young love and a possible ghostly person. What more would you ask for? Got out and get this for your teen, but...

Goodnight Brian by Steven Manchester is a must, must read!

Image
It is the year 1976. Frank and Joan Mauretti have a baby boy named Brian Francis Mauretti. All seems well for a while. That is until Joan fears something is wrong with Brian. She takes Brian to the doctor. The doctor tells Joan Brian is probably just having some digestive problems and to try soy based milk. Joan does until Brian does not seem to be getting better but worse. She takes Brian to Dr. Alexander. Dr. Alexander initially diagnoses Brian with Bartter’s Syndrome. However Dr. Alexander still has his suspicions and researches some more. Finally he informs the family that Brian has metabolic alkalosis. This disorder is caused by a lack of chloride or sodium that causes a baby to have difficulty digesting food and thus the lack of weight gain. The source of the disorder is the soy milk that Brian consumed. The doctor tells the Mauretti family that Brian will never walk, talk, or be a normal child. Joan’s mother hearing the news does not believe this and will not give up t...
